Most of the Hmong Studies articles, books and dissertations listed in this newsletter and on the website may be found at the Hmong Resource Center Library (www.hmonglibrary.org) at the Hmong Cultural Center in Saint Paul, the largest depository of Hmong Studies academic journal articles and graduate theses and dissertations in the United States. The library also includes a Hmong Studies Virtual Library which includes links to full-text of hundreds of Hmong-related research studies. Nancy K. Mouavangsou. (2022). A Critical Ethnography of Hmong American Students Navigating and Transforming Their University. PhD Dissertation, University of California, Davis. The author of this graduate study examined the experiences of Hmong American college students at a California university. According to the researcher's abstract: "my findings highlight Hmong American students as possessing assets to navigate and transform their educational experiences in higher education. Most notably, in an act of transformative resistance to their marginalization on campus and within the Asian American Studies Department, the Hmong American undergraduates created their own student-initiated and student-led course where Hmong history, culture, and knowledge was centered, legitimized, and affirmed."
Pang Xiong. (2022). How Can We Enable Hmong Parents to Take Steps Towards Autism Identification?: Hmong Parents’ Beliefs about Autism and Their Experiences in the Identification Process. The author of this graduate study examined Hmong parents’ beliefs about ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and their experiences in the identification process with the goal of addressing the question: how can Hmong parents be supported to take steps towards ASD identification?

The purpose of this graduate study was to assess challenges that confront Hmong male students with the goal of better understanding how factors such as education, cultural influences, and life challenges impact the low educational attainment of Hmong male students in college.

The purpose of this graduate qualitative study was to examine the factors that influence pesticide exposure among small-scale Hmong farmers in the California Central Valley.

This article uses a feminist geography and social memory theoretical framework to explore Hmong women's life stories about their time with the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT between the late 1960s and early 1980s.
Kathleen A. Culhane-Pera et al. (2022). "Mobile health technology for hypertension management with Hmong and Latino adults: mixed methods community-based participatory research." Ethnicity and Health: 1-18. This article investigates Hmong and Latino adults' views about a health-based care model for hypertension management involving blood pressure self-monitoring, electronic transmission of blood pressure readings and responsive hypertension medication adjustment by a provider team.
Yan Lin et al. (2022). "Polygonum Capitatum, the Hmong Medicinal Flora: A Comprehensive Review of Its Phytochemical, Pharmacological and Pharmacokinetic Characteristics." Molecules 27: 1-15. This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the traditional usages, botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and clinical applications of a Hmong medicinal plant.
Maichou Lor et al. (2022). "Refugee-Related Trauma Patterns and Mental Health Symptoms Across Three Generations of Hmong Americans." Journal of Traumatic Stress 35: 1087-1098. The authors of this article assessed patterns of trauma exposure and mental health symptoms in three generations of Hmong adults. The authors observed that participants in the most complex and pervasive trauma class were the oldest, had the shortest U.S. residency, were the least proficient in English and reported the most severe mental health symptoms.
Maichou Lor, et al. (2022). "Validating Four Hmong Word Recognition Tests With Normal-Hearing Bilingual Hmong Individuals. " American Journal of Audiology 31: 1268-1278. The focus of this research study involved the validation of four digitally recorded and phonetically balanced 50-word recognition lists in the White Hmong dialect with normal-hearing bilingual Hmong adults.

This research study investigates how 17 Hmong American young adults' digital media usage affects and is also shaped by their cultural identity development.
Varangrat Nguanchoo et al. (2022). "Hmong Medicinal Plant Knowledge Transmission and Retention in Social Modernity." Human Ecology 50: 419-433. The authors of this article investigated Hmong medicinal plant knowledge in Thailand, focusing on knowledge transmission and retention. They found that Hmong medicinal plant knowledge is increasingly being threatened and that the useful passing of traditional knowledge from the older generations to the next may be lost in the near future.
Tian Shi. (2022). "Visualized Trauma, Sensitized Resistance: Urban Art among the French Hmong community." Cosmopolitan Civil Societies: An Interdisciplinary Journal 14(2): 40-51. This article explores how Hmong artists in France represent traumatic memory, reflect nostalgia, and inspire people to collaborate to build resilience.
Dinh Huong Thao, Nong Van Hai and Nguyen Thuy Duong. (2022). "Complete Human mtDNA Genome Sequences Revealed Haplotype Features of the Hmong-Mien Language Family in Vietnam." Academia Journal of Biology 44(2): 21-28. The authors of this article analyze the mitochondrial DNA sequences taken from 120 males belonging to the Hmong-Mien language family in Vietnam including Dao, Hmong and Pathen. The authors found that in terms of genetic distance, Dao and Hmong were more distinguished from each other, while Hmong and Pathen were more related.
Nathan White. (2022). "The Hmong Medical Corpus: A biomedical corpus for a minority language." Language Resources and Evaluation 56: 1315-1332. The author of this article describes a project involving the development of a biomedical corpus in the Hmong language. The methodology presented is intended to provide a reproducible approach for the creation of biomedical NE-annotated corpora for other resource-poor languages.
